Updated: 6 days ago

The courses and workshops in the Low-Impact Forestry Training Series bring participants into the forested areas of the farm to gain a fresh perspective on what assets the woodlands contain.

The courses in this series include:

  • Practical Farm Woodland Management

  • Woodland Tools and Their Applications

  • Chainsaw Skills Training Course: Introduction to Chainsaw Safety and Directional Felling

  • Chainsaw Skills Training Course: Advanced Tree Felling

  • Logs to Lumber

  • Woodland Management for Wildlife Habitat

Draft Animal Series

Participants work with draft animals on The Berry Center’s farm and woodlands to gain fresh perspective on the history, care, and practical uses of mules and oxen on farms today.

If the use of draft animals implies diversity, homegrown energy and fertility, appropriateness of scale, and a significant measure of built-in economic health on the farm, it also implies economic diversity and health in the local community.

—Wendell Berry, Taking Draft Animals Seriously

The courses in this series include:

  • Introduction to Mule Teamster Skills: Working Draft Mules on the Farm and in the Woodlands

  • Introduction to Draft Cattle Skills: Working Draft Cattle on the Farm and in the Woodlands

  • Harnessing the Power of Mules in Timber Operations (Spring 2025 dates coming soon!)
